On Tuesday, January 12, the Mexican Ministry of Health published rules regulating the use of medical cannabis. This is an important step in a broader reform to create the world's largest legal cannabis market.
The new rules were signed by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. This allows pharmaceutical companies to conduct medical research on cannabis products. In addition to the pharmaceutical side, the recreational use of marijuana will also change, which could lead to Mexico becoming the largest national cannabis market in the world.
With these new rules, companies wishing to conduct research must obtain approval from the Mexican health regulator COFEPRIS. Furthermore, research has to be be conducted in controlled, independent laboratories. The regulation also lays down rules for the sowing, growing and harvesting of cannabis for medicinal purposes, allowing companies to legally grow marijuana in Mexico.
Mexico is in the final stages of legalizing the recreational use of marijuana. This bill is expected to be passed by Congress in the next period.
